In 1983, Merle a teacher of 19 years was tired of his one line grade book and never knowing the students progress or attendance so he came up with a Gradebook with 3 lines for each student to track attendance, daily score and a running total. With the running total he knew in seconds at anytime how the student was doing and now progress reports or weekly eligibility cards where a breeze and with the attendance right there if the student had a 0 it was easy to see why. When his fellow teachers saw his book they wanted one also, so Merle took a sabbatical leave and developed what is now the 9GB-049 Gradebook. Whaley Gradebook Co, Inc. became a reality in 1985 and was run by Merle’s wife Margaret and his 3 sons (Frank 1963, Wes 1964 and Glen 1969). Merle retired from teaching in 1988 with 24 years of dedicated service and went full time with his new company. Merle & Margaret worked long hours taking orders, shipping product and traveling to teaching conventions. This continued for 23 years until their retirement in December of 2007 and is now owned by their son Glen who started working full time for the company in 1995.
None of this could have happened without the help of family and friends, many of who became employees. Glen Whaley –full time in 1995, Janet Hyde was hired in 1998, her husband Robert (VP of Operations) in 2002 and Robert’s sister Carolyn Ridenour in 2007 make up the still family owned company with American Made Products.
We thank you for your continued support and wish you success and happiness,
The Whaley Gradebook Co, Inc.
