In 1983, Merle Whaley, a teacher of 19 years, became tired of his one line grade book and not knowing a student’s progress or attendance. So he devised a Gradebook with 3 lines for each student to track attendance, daily score and a running total. With the running total he was immediately able to determine how the student was doing. Writing progress reports or weekly eligibility cards became much simpler. And with the attendance and daily score tabulated, it became easier to see why a student’s running total might have been 0.
When Merle’s colleagues saw his Gradebook, they wanted one also. So, he took a sabbatical leave and developed what is now the 9GB-049 Gradebook. In 1985 Whaley Gradebook Co, Inc. became a reality; initially operated by Merle’s wife Margaret and his 3 sons (Frank 1963, Wes 1964 and Glen 1969). Upon retiring from teaching in 1988 with 24 years of dedicated service, Merle began to work full time with his new company. For 23 years Merle & Margaret worked long hours receiving orders, shipping product and traveling to teaching conventions. In December of 2007 they both retired from the business and handed ownership to their son Glen (who started working for the company full time in 1995). Over the years without the help of family and friends (many of whom have become employees), Whaley Gradebook Co., Inc. would not be the company it is today. In addition to Glen Whaley starting to work full time in 1995, Janet Hyde was hired in 1998, her husband Robert (VP of Operations) was hired in 2002, and Robert’s sister Carolyn Ridenour was hired in 2007. make up the still family owned company with American Made Products.
We thank you for your continued support and wish you success and happiness,
The Whaley Gradebook Co, Inc.
